Beijing Bell Tower

Also called the Zhonglou, the Beijing Bell Tower stands tall just behind the Drum Tower. The Bell Tower and Drum Tower together were impressive structures in Beijing in the old days. They were the official timekeepers for the nation till 1924. From the arched doorways, stone steps lead to the upper floors till you reach the top of the gigantic copper Bell. The bell itself hangs on an eight-square massive wooden frame from the second floor downwards. Approximately 7 meters in length and weighing about 63 tons, the Bell is said to be the largest and heaviest one in China. In the old days, the gong could be heard for miles and miles.
