Lugou Bridge (Marco Polo Bridge)

Supported by 281 pillars, the beautiful Lugou Bridge or Marco Polo Bridge, has a span of 9 meters going across the Yongding River and has figured prominently in Marco Polo's chronicles. This ancient bridge is an architectural marvel and is situated 15Kms from Beijing. On each of the 281 pillars is a stone lion. And the lions have more lions carved onto their heads, underbellies, and paws. Built from granite, there is a large central arch and ten small arches across the length of the bridge that have piers. The piers have been constructed to protect the area from floods and ice. The unusual lions make this one of the most interesting tourist attractions near Beijing.
