Ling Canal

Guilin, China

Located in Guilin, China the Ling Canal (Lingqu or Magic Canal) is believed to be the oldest canal in the world. With a length of 36.4Kms, it shows the high level of engineering knowledge and expertise of the ancient Chinese people. It expertly connects the Yangtze and Pearl Rivers by connecting their respective tributaries, namely the Xiang and Li Rivers. This ancient canal was placed so strategically that it created a crucial water transport system for civilian and military use. On the banks of the canal is the popular tourist spot called the Water Street Scenic Area, which has exquisite Qin and Han pavilions, bridges, and many recreational facilities.
