The islet “Three Pools Mirroring the Moon” is the most scenic and mystical spot of the West Lake Scenic Area. The entire Area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and has some of the most beautiful landscapes (natural and man-made) in the world. This islet has been created from reclaimed land during the Ming Dynasty, on which three pavilions and pools were built during the Song Dynasty. The pavilions have niches into which candles are placed in the autumn season. The lighted niches reflected in the three pools look like multiple moons. This gives the islet a mystical appearance and it has inspired many artists, authors, and poets over the ages.
