The largest contribution towards preserving the ancient art of making seals has been that of the Xiling Seal Society situated on the Solitary Island, Hangzhou, China. Established in 1904 by four prominent seal-making masters of Hangzhou, the society is involved in preserving ancient seals, in researching new seal-making techniques, and encouraging correlated activities like painting and calligraphy. Even today, it is the most powerful academic society studying seals and promoting the art all over the globe. Every year, during the spring and autumn seasons, the society holds exhibitions on seals, calligraphy, poems, inscriptions, paintings, etc. that have a large number of attendees.
