Tunxi Old Street (Lao Jie)

Huangshan, China

The Tunxi Old Street (Lao Jie) is a commercial area that dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was a busy marketplace with many shops that still exist. The buildings are the best-preserved examples of the Hongcun-style merchant's homes. Most of these brick-and-wood 2 or 3-storied structures have homes at the top and shops at the ground level selling Chinese tea and calligraphy items even today. The old ink factory in Tunxi still manufactures ink blocks using the ancient traditional method. Tourists can buy colored ink palettes, calligraphy paper and pens in the shops. Visitors can also enjoy at the street cafes, tea shops, shopping area, and more at the market.
