Considered one of the most ancient historical sites, the Yumbulagang palace was built for Nyatri Tsanpo, the first king of Tibet in the 2nd century BC. In the Tibetan language, the word Yumbulagang translates as the "sacred palace of the mother and son". As it is one of the first tall buildings in ancient Tibet, it has a watchtower to look out for invaders. Today, the palace is a heritage site and has many historical artifacts as well as ancient religious relics. Aside from the unique and beautiful architecture, the palace gives a bird's eye view of the scenic beauty in the surrounding villages along with their green farmlands.
