May 4th Square

The May 4th Square is a huge public square in the central district of Qingdao, China. It is named after the May 4th nationwide movement that began in Qingdao. A sculpture called the "May Wind" was erected to commemorate that day near the seaside. It is a popular tourist attraction with the government buildings to the north, the ocean to the south, and high-rises on the other two sides. On the 4th of May each year, the square is full of people flying kites of different colors and sizes. It marks the protest of the Chinese people against Article 156 of the Treaty of Versailles according to which Qingdao was given to Japan instead of China and demonstrations were held in protest.
