Since the Tang, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, the Shaxi Ancient Town in the Yunnan Province of China has been a major marketplace for tea and horses. It is protected under the World Monuments Watch List. Its main square is the Sideng Market, which is a major business and trading center even today. The two-storied buildings with large courtyards look just like they did centuries ago.
