Sideng Market

Shaxi, China

Since the Tang, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, the Shaxi Ancient Town in the Yunnan Province of China has been a major marketplace for tea and horses. It is protected under the World Monuments Watch List. Its main square is the Sideng Market, which is a major business and trading center even today. The two-storied buildings with large courtyards look just like they did centuries ago. All kinds of goods are sold at the Friday weekly market, which includes fresh produce, tea, local snacks, livestock, horses, saddles, handmade gift items, utensils, provisions, etc. There are peddlers, blacksmiths, caravanserais (Inns), cafes, souvenir shops, florists, etc. along the narrow, interconnected alleys of the Market.
