Sakya Monastery (Pel Sakya)

Shigatse, China

About 125Kms from Shigatse in the Tsang Province of Tibet, China is one of the most interesting Monasteries in the world. Called the Sakya Monastery (Pel Sakya or Pale Earth), this is the most important monastery for the Tibetan Sakyapa Buddhists. Its architecture is similar to medieval Mongolian structures, unlike the Yuan style of other Monasteries in the region. The Monastery has a priceless collection of religious books and thangkas (painted silk cloth) with Tibetan Buddhist scriptures dating back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. These exquisite relics have been written with silver, gold, and jade powders. The walls too are adorned with murals depicting Buddhist mythology and philosophy.
