Songpan North Gate (Songzhou Gate)

Songpan, China

The Songpan North Gate (Songzhou Gate) located in the northwestern end of the Sichuan Province of China was a militarily strategic site during the Tang Dynasty. Today, it is a major trade and tourist link because it connects the vast grasslands of Hongyuan-Ruoergai, Jiuzhaigou, and Huanglong with the rest of China. In the ancient times, due to its strategic location, seven 10-meter tall gates were built around the city with locally made blue colored bricks. Five of the gates were within the city facing the four primary directions and the southwest. Two gates were built on the outer defense lines of the city.
