The Huli Shan Fortress in Xiamen, China is considered a very important historical spot. The Fort was built in 1894 to protect the Xiamen Island from invaders. It covers an area of 70,000 square meters. Two massive cannons guarded the south and east sides of the fort, of which one still stands. The cannon has featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. The ramparts are made with a mixture of mud, rice, ash, and brown sugar which has remained sturdy even today. The site has the soldiers’ barracks, a magazine and other protected buildings, and a tunnel. All these are surrounded by an imposing granite wall. It is a must-see for history buffs.
