Although it will take about three hours to drive here from Xiamen, it will be worth your while. Hakka Earth Buildings were constructed by the members of the Hakka ethnic group, who arrived in South China more than 1,400 years ago.
These houses are of various shapes and they are made of earth and other materials, such as bamboo chips, lime, or sand. They are extremely sturdy because the community expected a war at the time and each structure could fit hundreds of people. Today, they offer an insight into a way of life that is slowly being forgotten. UNESCO listed Hakka Earth Buildings as a World Heritage Site.
