Xiahe, China

The Labrang Monastery (Labuleng Si) is one of the major monasteries of the Gelug Tibetan Buddhists. With 1,500 monks living here, it is a place of worship even today. It is located in the Gannan Tibetan Prefecture of the Gansu Province of China. The monastery has a picturesque location because it is on the banks of the Daxia River. With a white building and gilded roof, the architecture of the monastery is a pleasant blend of the Indian Vihara and Tibetan styles. It has 18 prayer halls, 6 learning centers, a sutra conference area, many statues, beautiful murals, and a library with 60,000 sutras.
