Located in the center of Chengdu, Wenshu Monastery is still active and it has been that way ever since it was built during the Sui Dynasty (605 – 617). It was first called Xinxiang Temple, but the local government renamed it after a monk who was believed to be the reincarnation of Manjusri.
Since it is still active, it cannot be considered a genuine tourist attraction, but it is the best-preserved Buddhism temple in the province. The visitors can take a look at one of more than 500 cultural relics, including the delicate statue of Buddha brought from Burma in 1922 and a broken skull piece of famous monk Xuan Zang. Travelers can rest while enjoying tea and listening to folk music or stroll through the beautiful garden outside the temple.
