Unlike some of the other ancient museums in China, the Hohhot Museum was built on the 10th anniversary when the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was established in 1957. It has a special section with exhibits of the Genghis Khan era. Genghis Khan was the first ruler to unite the different ethnic tribes of Mongolia and make the region a vast combined empire in the 13th century. The museum also has an intricate and artistic collection of Mongol bone carvings that depict historical events. Many of the displayed object and maps have captions in English so their history and significance are easy to understand.
