The Great Bell Temple

The Great Bell Temple, Beijing, China was built in the 18th century during the Ming Dynasty. Later, a large bell was installed from which the temple gets its name. The Bell is 6.75 meters tall and weighs 46.5 tons. Another unique aspect is that the Bell is inscribed with Buddhist sutras using 227,000 Chinese characters and Sanskrit alphabets. In ancient times the bell was rung 108 times at special religious and imperial ceremonies because the Bell was considered auspicious. The Emperors would pray at the Bell Temple for rain and prosperity for the people.
