Shichahai (Houhai)

Located in the northern part of downtown Beijing, China is Shichahai. This is a famous scenic area that has three lakes, namely Houhai, Qianhai, and Xihai. Houhai, which means “the sea at the back” is an enormous artificial lake. In the ancient times, the banks of the lake were filled with countless wine shops, artisan shops, and small opera houses. Today, the lake is surrounded by a booming commercial zone with bars, tea shops, roadside cafes, large restaurants, and many modern entertainment facilities. You can indulge in boating in summer and ice-skating on the lake in winter. The nearby imperials courtyards are also worth a visit.
